Bánh Mì Phượng

Hailed by a celebrity chef as "the best sandwich in the world" — and the site of a food poisoning outbreak that sickened over 300 people
📍 Hoi An, Cẩm Phô Ward — the famous queue outside 2B Phan Châu Trinh Street🏆 Legendary tier · Street Food🥖 A baguette stuffed with braised pork, ham, and cilantro — crisp outside, soft inside, layered in every bite

On Phan Châu Trinh Street, a long line forms outside one shop nearly every day of the year, tourists clutching maps or phones, asking the way to Phượng's. This is Bánh Mì Phượng, Hoi An's most famous bánh mì shop and one of the calling cards that put this ancient town on the global map.

One compliment sparked a worldwide queue

In 2016, the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain praised this shop on his show Parts Unknown as serving the best baguette sandwich in the world. That line has since been quoted by countless travel outlets, turning Bánh Mì Phượng into a must-visit landmark for international tourists in Hoi An — and the line outside never seems to shorten.

Honest correction: behind the fame, a food-safety scandal

But this shop's story isn't only praise. In September 2023, a mass food poisoning outbreak occurred here, cross-reported by multiple mainstream outlets including VnExpress International, Saigoneer, and Vietnam News: Vietnamese health authorities reported 313 people showing symptoms, 103 of them foreign tourists; lab tests confirmed Salmonella contamination in several ingredients, and the (then) Quảng Nam provincial government fined the shop 96 million VND and ordered it closed for three months to overhaul its operations. This guide includes this dish based on its objective fame and the volume of international media coverage — not as an endorsement of quality. Checking the shop's recent hygiene reviews before eating there is the more responsible move.

⚠️
A Food-Safety NoteThe 2023 mass poisoning outbreak is a verified public record, not a rumor.

Before You Go

  • Wait times can stretch long during peak hours — it's worth avoiding the midday rush.
  • There are plenty of filling options; if you're unsure, ask staff to recommend their signature combination.
  • There are other bánh mì shops along Phan Châu Trinh Street worth comparing — you don't have to commit to just one.

Don't Let the Hype Cloud Your Judgment

  • "Best in the world" is Bourdain's personal opinion, repeated endlessly by media — not a certification from any official authority.
  • The 2023 poisoning incident was confirmed by an official investigation that found Salmonella in multiple ingredients — it is not a single unverified rumor.
  • Fame and a food-safety scandal can coexist; both are genuinely part of this shop's story.

One compliment can make a bakery famous worldwide, but the real lesson is that fame never equals zero risk — deliciousness and caution can exist side by side.
